Black Grouse, North Yorkshire 2 September 2011 Unlike the Red Grouse shown below, these splendid birds were very wary. |
Short-eared Owl, Grinton Moor, North Yorkshire 31 August 2011 See below. This shot was taken on the second, closer approach when I couldn't get the whole bird in the field of view! A good advert for the EOS 7D's AF system! Click to enlarge |

Short-eared Owl, Grinton Moor, North Yorkshire 31 August 2011 On this visit, there were few Red Grouse around, but this SEO more than made up for it! This bird was hunting close to the car, and then seemed interested in me, as it turned and flew directly overheard. It then turned and made a second even closer approach. Click to enlarge |

Red Grouse, Grinton Moor, North Yorkshire 30 August 2011 There were several of these confiding birds present close to the road on this visit. Most were of course in heather, but this photo is of a bird on bare ground, so the feathered legs show well. Click to enlarge |

Great Skua, Redpoint Beach, nr Gairloch, Highland 14 July 2011 This bird was just sitting on the beach, and allowed quite a close approach. A slightly better quality than my previous photo of this species, taken way back in 2003! |
Black-throated Diver, Aultbea, Highland 12 July 2011 One of four obliging birds already on the sea - probably failed breeders. The light was very difficult for this photo, with the birds close to being silhouetted. Most of my shots had the eye in deep shade, but for this one the head is just turned enough for the eye to catch the light. My closest Black-throated Diver pic to date, by far. Click to enlarge |

Black-throated Diver, Aultbea, Highland 12 July 2011 Two of the group of four, with better lighting conditions and a much bluer sea! Click to enlarge |
Common Gull, Aultbea, Highland 10 July 2011 On the beach in front of the divers I was much more interested in. Seemed worth a quick snap. |
Redshank. Titchfield Haven, Hampshire 25 June 2011 Unlike the Avocets, this Redshank appeared briefly with two others right in front of the Meon Shore hide. Click to enlarge |
Avocets, Titchfield Haven, Hampshire 25 June 2011 There were several Avocets around, but only one pair seemed to have fledged any young (2). Unfortunately, these splendid birds never came close enough to the hides for good shots. |
juv Black Headed Gull, Hayling Island, Hampshire 25 June 2011 Large numbers of juveniles around, of varying ages.. |
Black Headed Gull, Hayling Island, Hampshire 25 June 2011 A flight shot with some background, which didn't confuse the 7D's AF system for once! Click to enlarge |
Mediterranean Gull, Hayling Island, Hampshire 25 June 2011 Much like the Sandwich Terns, except these tended to keep away. |
Sandwich Tern, Hayling Island, Hampshire 25 June 2011 There were a few of these nesting on the old oyster beds, and occasionally one would come close enough for a passing shot. Click pic to enlarge |
Common Tern, Hayling Island, Hampshire 25 June 2011 Plenty of these around, but unfortunately I saw no Little Terns. |
Black-necked Grebe, Woolhampton Gravel Pits,
Berkshire 26 March 2011 Unfortunately the two summage plumage birds had departed this morning, leaving this transitional plumage bird behind. Better than nothing! Click pic to enlarge |
