Short-eared Owl, Gloucestershire 6 March 2020 A return visit to this not so secret site, but again the birds were keeping their distance for the most part. Short-eared Owl & Kestrel, Gloucestershire 6 March 2020 On arrival, I found these birds having a prolonged argument high overhead. It is possible that the Kestrel was trying to steal the vole from the SEO! They were rather distant, so I thought I'd try this montage of the shots I took, as something a bit different. Kingfisher, Nature Photography Hides, Droitwich 25 January 2020 A productive session at these hides today, despite fewer dives that recently, probably due to the warmer conditions and no recent heavy rain. A nice reflection here, but it would have been better if the shutter had fired just a ms or two earlier, to capture the tip of the bill just touching the water! Bewick's Swan, Slimbridge WWT, Gloucestershire 10 January 2020 Over the Tack Piece is a rare brighter spell before the hide became too crowded (even on a Friday!). Very few duck in flight this morning, and the very few that were, were far too fast for me. Click to enlarge |

Bittern, Bucks 14 December 2019 I spent 3 hours this afternoon in this cold, draughty hide and, after about an hour, I had a 20 sec view of a Bittern crossing one of the channels cut in the reeds. Only when it had almost disappeared again did it emerge into sunlight (for about 1 second)! Thereafter there were no further sightings while I was there.... Click to enlarge |

Water Rail, Bucks 14 December 2019 Unlike the Bittern (see above), a Water Rail was on view for much longer, but only once did it come reasonably close to the hide and pose very briefly out in the open. |
