Yellow-eyed Penguin

Yellow-eyed Penguin

Sandfly Bay, Otago, New Zealand, 6 December 2012
EOS 7D & 400mmf4DO & x1.4TC. 1/1600 sec f5.6 ISO 400

Photographing penguins in New Zealand is more difficult than many other places, as they tend to be very wary. For example they will not come out of the sea if people are walking along the beach in their vicinity. So although this was a known site for Yellow-eyed Penguins, getting a 'nice' low angle shot of them on the beach wasn't straightforward, especially as they are present only in small numbers and we only had limited time. In the event, this shot took some waiting for, and luck - always a useful ingredient!
