Kaikoura
Pelagic, New Zealand, 19 November 2012
EOS 7D & 400mmf4DO. 1/5000
sec f5.6 ISO 800
Wandering Albatross is one of those ultimate birds that requires some serious long haul travel just to see, let alone photograph. A pelagic off Kaikoura on South Island, New Zealand is probably the best place in the world to get close to these amazing birds - they feed only a few meters from the back of the boat! We went on two pelagics on successive days, and I took 1000+ seabird shots. The pitching boat and the birds being too close for my 400mm prime lens were two of the problems that led to only a very few being 'keepers'. I like this photo because it has the bird and the sea behind to gave some scale and sense of size to this monster! |
