Red-backed Shrike

Red-backed Shrike

Everleigh, Wiltshire, UK. 20 October 2012
EOS 7D & 400mmf4DO + x1.4TC. 1/1000 sec f5.6 ISO 800

This is a Birdguides 'Notable Photo'

This bird had been present for several days before I was able to try for it. I was encouraged by the photos others were getting - it was clearly an approachable individual unlike many other shrikes I have encountered! When I arrived in the area it was very foggy and not at all clear where to go - for once the BirdGuide info was sadly lacking in detail. Eventually however I found the right spot, and was delighted to find this confiding bird showing very well on arrival. Many of my earlier shots were spoiled by the mist, but after some time the sun tried break through, albeit weakly. This was almost the final shot I took, before the bird decided to move away into the distance.
