Oxon Bird Pics Spring/Summer 2011

 Turnstone Turnstone, Farmoor

15 August 2011

Actually some sun, which always helps! One of two that were typically quite tame. This was another almost frame filling pic.

  Swift, Farmoor

13 August 2011

The best of quite few attempts at these high speed subjects, which were flying around the causeway. I suspect one of the new AF options on the 7D helped with this one!

 Ruff Ruff, Farmoor

13 August 2011

A frame filling shot of this obliging bird, albeit from above.

Ruff, Farmoor

13 August 2011

Another close view, more or less on the same level as the bird.

Ruff, Farmoor

13 August 2011

A close up, not from above.

  Buzzard Buzzard, Shellingford Pit

6 August 2011

A very pale bird.

 Dunlin Dunlin, Farmoor

6 August 2011

A quiet day at Farmoor, but at least this Dunlin was an adult still in full plumage - not so common here. It was slightly more wary than some juveniles.

 Greenshank Greenshank, Shellingford Pit

30 July 2011

Despite the worryingly low water level, there were two Greenshanks and a Green Sandpiper today.

  Yellowhammer, Downs

23 July 2011

My first half presentable photograph of this quite common species! They are not easy to get near enough to for really good results. For this one, the car was a reasonably effective hide.

  Little Ringed Plover

14 May 2011

A closer and hence sharper pic than the one in April. My best to date of this charismatic wader.

 Whitethroat Whitethroat, Downs

14 May 2011

A nice compliment to the pic below. Unusually, the car worked quite well as a hide for this bird.

 Lesser Whitethroat Lesser Whitethroat, Otmoor

25 April 2011

Eventually came out at the top of a bush for a few seconds before flying off!

My first pic of this elusive species.

Little Egret Little Egret, Pinkhill, Farmoor

22 April 2011

Conveniently flew in and after a while feeding in the nearby bay, walked onto the top of the island right in front of the hide before flying off to Shrike Meadow!

I think this is my first photo of this species in summer plumage, with the plumes showing nicely.

Little Egret, Pinkhill, Farmoor

22 April 2011

Slightly earlier than above.

Grasshopper Warbler Grasshopper Warbler, Pinkhill, Farmoor

22 April 2011

Briefly out in the open...

 White Wagtail White Wagtail, Farmoor

16 April 2011

One of about 20 this morning. Also 2 Yellow Wags as well. These are normally quite wary, but I managed to get close enough to this one.

  Slavonian Grebe, Farmoor

9 April 2011

A splendid bird almost in full summer plumage. What glorious weather as well, with full sun even early on.

Could this be the Witney Lake bird from the winter still lingering in the county?

Slavonian Grebe, Farmoor

9 April 2011

This pic is just about sharp enough for this head-only shot to work.

  Little Ringed Plover

2 April 2011

I'm pretty sure the improved AF system on my new EOS 7D helped considerably with this fast moving, erratic subject.

Little Ringed Plover

2 April 2011

Not very approachable on the ground - this was the best I could do. My 2005 digiscope pic is probably better!

 Gargeney Garganey, Farmoor

26 March 2011

With the weather better than forecast, it was good to find this gem still present today, remarkably close to the causeway. Avidly feeding on the recent hatch of flies.

NB. Back in 2005, there was also a confiding Gargeney at Farmoor which I remember well, but my camera gear has progressed somewhat since then!

Grey Heron, Port Meadow

12 March 2011

Signs of spring today with one wary LRP and 1-2 singing Chiffchaffs, but the only subject I could find for the lens and new camera was this remarkably tame Heron over by the boats!

Great Crested Grebes, Farmoor

26 February 2011

An unusual sighting of a pair engaged in what is known as a 'weed dance'. This only lasted about half a second, or 4 frames of my new EOS 7D!
