Oxon Bird Pics Autumn/Winter 2013/14

Siskin, Abingdon Sewage Works
1 February 2014
Taken on a probably successful search for the Siberian Chiffchaffs
that have been reported here recently!
There were
definitely at least 6 ordinary Chiffchaffs along the northern
perimeter track, and in the south-west corner of the adjacent
sports field. One greyer individual that looked a good candidate
for a Siberian, but I couldn't be sure - I didn't hear any
convincing calls. |

Stonechat, Otmoor
25 January 2014
For a
change, there were masses of birds on Otmoor today but most were
very distant.
Three moderately obliging Stonechats near
the hide were a welcome exception. Of these, the male was the more
photogenic but also the wariest. |

Stonechat, Otmoor
25 January 2014
See above.
This less impressive bird was of course tamer, and easier to
approach. |

Falcated Duck, Dix Pit, Stanton Harcourt
22 December 2013
Thanks to a timely text from Badger, I was able to get to Dix Pit
just as a few others were arriving for this bird, which showed
shortly well to the left of the viewing area by the re-cycling
centre.
It was quite wary and never came close enough for a
reasonable photo. This record shot was taken from back at the
viewing area, which is getting more & more obscured by bushes and
small trees. |
 |
Red-necked Grebe, Farmoor
2 November 2013
Generally a little too far offshore for good pics, but just once
it came in closer right in front of me.
Makes a change from
the standard sideways on shot! |
 |
Red-necked Grebe, Farmoor
2 November 2013
The
more standard view, from the same close approach.
|
 |
Great-crested Grebe, Farmoor
2 November 2013
This swam sedately past, much closer in than the Red-necked
usually was.
|
 |
Slavonian Grebe, Farmoor
26 October 2013
This bird was having a very high success rate catching these
small fish
- almost every dive produced a catch. |
 |
Slavonian Grebe, Farmoor
26 October 2013
Another fish-in-bill shot. |

Slavonian Grebe, Farmoor
26 October 2013
Another shot, before the sun came out briefly. It was nice and
close in to the southern edge of FII.

Stonechat, Otmoor
19 October
One of three near
to the hide. |
 |
Kestrel, Otmoor
19 October
An obliging juvenile
on the path to the first screen. It even flew towards me and
briefly hovered, but it was too quick and close for me to get onto
it! |
 |
Great White Egret, Otmoor
19 October
A fortunate
find immediately I arrived at Greenaways. It quickly moved off
along the ditch into the reeds. |
 |
Great crested Grebe, Farmoor
12 October 2013
Slightly closer to the causeway than usual.
|
 |
Little Grebe, Otmoor
5 October 2013
Unfortunately the GW Egret had gone and this rather scrawny
bird, from the first screen, wasn't much compensation! |
 |
Little Stint, Farmoor
4 October 2013
A nice confiding bird!

Whinchat, Lark Hill, Wantage
7 September 2013
One of two at this migration "hotspot" - following the Wryneck
last weekend! |
 |
Common Tern, Farmoor
7 September 2013
This juvenile was flying around the causeway being extremely
vocal. |

|
Dunlin, Farmoor
7 September 2013
A quiet day with only a small party of 6 Dunlin along the
causeway. There is however no concrete visibile on this photo!

A close up view as this bird more than filled the frame.
