Hoverfly sp., Whitecross Green Wood, Oxon

Canon EOS R5 & RF 100-500mm with x1.4 TC

Taken on a successful quest for a Southern Migrant Hawker photo!

After this ace dragonfly had flown off, I noticed these brightly coloured hoverflies catching the light with the background in shade. Hence they appeared to be glowing in the dark!

Many thanks to John Bloomfield who advises that "it is probably a male (eyes meet at the top of the head) of the genus Syrphus. If it is, then identifying males to species level is not possible without microscopic examination. Another possibility is the related Epistrope genus, but again many of these can only be separated to species level by microscopic examination (eg of hair colour on scutellum)".

Hence it could be a Common Banded Hoverfly Syrphus ribesii.

A side view of what is probably the same species, but the ID of Eristalis hoverflies appears somewhat problematic, and the information I've found on-line isn't conclusive/

The garden is getting more scrutiny than usual during the Covid-19 lockdown. These are challenging subjects!

This tiny bug looked pretty spectacular as it worked its way up this stem, so I tried for a few shots with my macro lens. Even so, a fair amount of cropping was needed for this image.

These tiny insects were quite obvious when trying to photograph the special dragonflies and damselflies at this site. They made challenging subjects for the 180mm macro lens due to their size!

Returning from visit to a quiet Otmoor, I found two of these flies hovering in the middle of the path, so I couldn't resist trying some flight shots of a fly!
