Brown Hairstreak, Otmoor. 20 August 2020 Canon EOS 7D II & EF 100-400mm USM II Again unsuccessful with my Odonata targets on Otmoor, but this was some compensation. Seen along the Roman Road and spotted by others. It wasn't however very settled and didn't oblige for long. Almost 7 years to the day since my last Brown Hairstreak photo at the same site - see below! |

White letter Hairstreak, Chazey Heath, Oxon. 5 July 2019 Canon EOS 7D II & EF 100-400mm USM II On the bramble hedge behind the pub. It took me about 2hrs on site to find just this one worn individual. After another hour with none seen, I gave up! |

Silver washed Fritillary, Trap Grounds, Oxon. 4 July 2019 Canon EOS 7D II & EF 100-400mm USM II This site didn't have many dragonflies, but this was an unexpected bonus. It didn't hang around for long though. |

Purple Hairstreak, Bernwood Forest, Oxon.
7 July 2018 Canon EOS 7D II & EF 100-400mm USM II In the absence of much Emperor activity, most attention was on these smaller but special butterflies, low down on a Oak. |

Purple Emperor, Bernwood Forest, Oxon.
7 July 2018 Canon EOS 7D II & EF 100-400mm USM II Very hot today and this insect was sticking to the shade! So no chance of seeing the iridescence on the wings properly. |

Marbled White, M40 Compensation Area, Oxon 25 June 2016 Poor weather so no sign of any Black Hairstreaks which were the main object of this visit. This Marbled White was quite settled in the cool, damp conditions. Click to enlarge |

Orange Tip, Barton Pool near Abingdon, Oxon 28 May 2016 Canon EOS 7D mkII & EF 180mm f3.5 macro Right in front of me by the path while on a dragonfly hunt. See also below. |

Orange Tip, Barton Pool near Abingdon, Oxon 28 May 2016 Canon EOS 7D mkII & EF 180mm f3.5 macro This is an unusual shot! The male is actually in flight and appeared to be trying to mate with the female below right but its aim was a bit off and it ended up settling next to her! |

Swallowtail, Strumpshaw Fen RSPB, Norfolk. 21 June 2014 Canon EOS 7D & EF 400mm f5.6 My main aim on this trip was to find Norfolk Hawkers but this was a very nice find as well! Conveniently close to the visitor centre. |

Swallowtail, Strumpshaw Fen RSPB, Norfolk. 21 June 2014 Canon EOS 7D & EF 400mm f5.6 See above. Another view of this great butterfly! |

Clouded Yellow, Shellingford Pit, Oxon. 31 August 2013 Canon EOS 7D & EF 400mm f5.6 A closer pic than that at Titchfield Haven but this was a rather worn specimen and settled on an unsightly piece of yellow plastic! |

Brimstone, Shellingford Pit, Oxon. 31 August 2013 Canon EOS 7D & EF 400mm f5.6 Presumably one from a second brood. |

Chalkhill Blue, Juniper Valley, Oxon 26 August 2013 Canon EOS 7D & EF 100mm f2.8 macro Note the slightly different pattern of spots from the Common Blue below. Unfortunately it was keeping its more impressive upper view to itself! Also a remarkable number of Clouded Yellows - probably at least 20! |

Small Tortoiseshell, Wantage, Oxon. 25 August 2013 Canon EOS 7D & EF 100mm f2.8 macro Great to see so many today on the buddleia. |

Brown Hairstreak, Otmoor. 24 August 2013 Canon EOS 7D & EF 400mm f5.6 Along the Roman Road where several have been seen recently. Thanks to the couple who alerted me to this pristine female and then held a branch down to allow me to take this shot. |

Brown Hairstreak, Otmoor. 24 August 2013 Canon EOS 7D & EF 100mm f2.8 macro The view from above, which I believe is more difficult to secure, required a change of lens. Unfortunately I couldn't get right over the top of it, so the rear of the wings isn't in focus. |

Common Blue, Crog Down, Oxon. 18 August 2013 A Panasonic TZ30 pic of this common species. |

Clouded Yellow, Titchfield Haven, Hants. 15 August 2013 A distant photo of this migrant taken from one of the hides. I've usually only seen this species dashing across fields in the past, but this one was happily feeding for some time. Just about the highlight of a rather disappointing visit to the reserve - the water levels were too high on the lagoons, so hardly any birds were present. |

Purple Emperor, Bernwood Forest, Oxon.
21 July 2012 Canon EOS 7D & EF 400mm f5.6 I found it impossible to find an angle from the back where both wings showed purple. So I had to settle for this one-sided shot. Click to enlarge |

3 July 2011 Canon EOS 7D & EF 100mm f2.8 macro As open I could get the wings in the overcast conditions. Not a hint of purple in this shot! |
