On 19-21 January 2026, there were exceptionally strong displays
but typically I was clouded out for most of the time. As it got
dark on the first evening, the aurora apps were showing very
high activity but it was raining in Wantage! Only later at
around 22:15 did it partially clear, so I initially setup in the
back garden to see what was showing.
This part of the
display was very bright so I needed to turn the ISO down!
Basically vivid red above intense green nearer the horizon.
After about 20 mins, I decided to relocate to a less obstructed
site close to nearby Sparsholt for a longer stint - see below. |

By the time I got to nearby Sparsholt, the display had faded
massively and the cloud was coming back. But I stuck at it for
over an hour, hoping that something could be done with the less
than dramatic images I was getting. Sure enough, back on the
computer I was able to retrieve images like the above until the
clouds completely took over the sky. |
